On the one hand, there’s optimism in regards to the potential for legalized online casino gambling in the state of Texas. Bills to expand types of legal gambling within the state recently were advanced through committee in the Texas State House by identical 9-3 votes. House Bill 2843 would permit casino gambling in Texas. House Bill 1942 would make online sports betting legal in the state.
That’s the good news. However, as much as the House seems on board with the idea of legal and regulated online casino gambling, the Texas State Senate remains a house divided. This is entirely problematic, since legalization of casino gambling will necessitate approval by both branches of state government.
As well, this expansion of legal gambling in the state would require changes to be made to the Texas Constitution that would institute the need for two-thirds majority approval in both chambers. That would need to be followed by a state-wide referendum on whether to legalize any new form of gambling.
Another stumbling block in the process is Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick. He remains steadfast in his opposition to any increase in gambling in the state.
