It was close between Betfred and bet365, so here’s how we split them. On sheer depth bet365 wins. If you want to cash out half a bet on a Tuesday night Champions League game, or build a same-game bet in-play, nobody does it better. But depth isn’t everything for most UK punters.

It’s not spotless. Betfred agreed to pay £900,000 in June 2026 over customer interaction failings, after a £240,000 penalty in May 2025 for breaching technical standards. bet365 settled for £239,085 in 2024. We’ve ranked both anyway because both are long-established, properly licensed and pay out, but you should know about those records before you sign up.

How we chose the best UK betting sites

We don’t rank on the size of the headline offer. A £60 package you’ll struggle to use is worth less than £30 you can bet on Saturday’s football. These are the six things we weigh.

Best betting site by sport

The best all-rounder isn’t always the best for the bet you actually want to place.

Football: bet365 and Unibet

For a tenner on the Saturday 3pm kick-off, bet365’s Bet Builder+ and in-play cash out are hard to beat. If you like building one big slip from a single match, Unibet’s bet builder takes up to 12 selections, and its welcome free bets are mostly bet builder tokens anyway.

Horse racing: Betfred, Ladbrokes and Coral

All three pay BOG from 8am and run extra places. Betfred adds free UK racing streams with any balance, and Ladbrokes streams UK racing free with an active account. With Cheltenham running from 16 to 19 March 2027 and the Grand National on 10 April 2027, it’s worth having two racing accounts so you can take the best price. Darts, tennis and snooker: Coral and Spreadex

Coral’s cash out covers darts, tennis and snooker, which is handy when a match at Ally Pally over Christmas swings in the third set. Spreadex streams tennis on selected events and lets you spread bet on totals if you fancy something beyond the match odds.

If you care about every tick of the price, SBK is built for you, and its Best Price feature shows where it stands. On popular markets you’ll often find bigger prices on Smarkets or Matchbook, even after 2% commission.

Free bets explained: what Bet £10 Get £50 is really worth

A free bet isn’t free cash. Almost every UK free bet is stake not returned, which means if it wins you get the winnings but not the stake. A £10 free bet on a 2/1 shot pays £20, not the £30 you’d get from a cash bet. That one rule cuts the real value of any offer roughly in half at short odds.

Then come the conditions. Most offers ask for a qualifying bet at minimum odds, often evens (2.0), sometimes 1/2 (1.5) or as high as 2/1 (3.0). Free bets usually expire after seven days. And more and more of them are locked to accas or bet builders with four or more legs, which win far less often than singles. Betway’s tokens, Unibet’s tokens and the SBK tokens all work this way.

Payment method matters too. Betfred and Betway want a debit card first deposit, Unibet takes debit card or instant bank transfer, and Smarkets and Ladbrokes exclude PayPal deposits from their welcome offers. Deposit with an e-wallet first and you can lose the offer before you’ve placed a bet.

How to find a reputable, trusted bookie

Any company taking bets from people in Great Britain needs a Gambling Commission licence. That’s been the rule since November 2014. A licensed bookie has to verify your age and identity before you bet, offer deposit limits, sign up to GAMSTOP and give you access to an independent dispute service if a complaint goes nowhere.

Checking a bookie takes two minutes. Scroll to the bottom of its website and find the licence number. Then search that number on the Gambling Commission public register and make sure the domain you’re on is listed under that licensee. If the number doesn’t match, or the site boasts that it isn’t on GAMSTOP, close the tab.

A licence isn’t the whole story, though. Read the regulatory actions on the register, look at recent Trustpilot reviews for patterns (slow withdrawals and sudden verification requests come up again and again), and check that the bookie lets you set limits easily. Who holds the licence for each UK betting site?

The register’s actions tab doesn’t always show older cases, so None shown on the register is a good sign but not a guarantee of a clean history.

What changed for UK punters in 2026

Wagering capped at 10x. Since 19 January 2026, any bonus with wagering can ask you to play it through no more than ten times the bonus amount. A £20 bonus can require £200 of bets at most. Most sports welcome offers are free bets rather than wagered bonuses, so you’ll notice this more at casinos, but it applies here too.

No more mixed bonuses. From the same date, bookies can’t make you use two products to qualify, so offers like bet £10 on football and get casino free spins are gone. If you want spins, compare them separately on our best UK online casinos page.

Higher betting duty from April 2027. From 1 April 2027 remote betting duty rises to 25% of bookmakers’ profits, except bets on UK horse racing, which stay at 15%. Spread bets and pool bets aren’t covered by the new rate. Nobody knows yet how bookies will respond, but it’s reasonable to expect welcome offers and margins on football to be watched more closely than on racing.

Affordability checks are still coming. The Gambling Commission confirmed in July 2026 that financial risk checks will be introduced in stages, starting with the biggest operators. No start date has been set.

New betting sites UK: are they worth it?

New bookies launch every year, and they often lead with a big headline offer to get noticed. BetSuna launched for UK and Irish customers in May 2026. easyBet, a bookmaker and exchange operated by Matchbook’s licence holder, arrived in October 2024. 247Bet launched in 2025.

Many new sites are white labels, which means a brand sitting on another company’s licence and platform. That’s not a problem in itself, but check who the licence holder is and what its record looks like. BetSuna, for example, runs on the ProgressPlay licence, and ProgressPlay paid a £1m penalty in May 2025. New sites also tend to have thinner racing coverage and no BOG, which is why none have made our top 12 yet.
