Coral is one of the cheapest ways into a big UK bookie: put a fiver on at 1/2 or bigger and you get six £5 free bets. Add Best Odds Guaranteed from 8am, an extra each-way place on UK races every day and shops on the high street, and it’s a solid pick for racing fans.

It’s not all good news. Coral’s Trustpilot score is poor and its owner paid a big regulatory settlement in 2022. Here’s how the offer works, what punters say and how Coral compares with Ladbrokes, Betfred and Betway.

Welcome offer

How the Coral free bet offer works

Sign up, get verified and deposit £5 or more. Then make your very first bet £5 or more at odds of 1/2 or bigger. Say you put a fiver on Manchester City to beat Fulham at 1/2. That’s enough. Coral adds six £5 free bets to your account after you place it.

Four of the six can go on any sports market: a horse at Kempton on Boxing Day, a darts match at Ally Pally, a Premier League scorer. One is for a football Bet Builder and one for a horse racing Bet Builder. That’s a lot more flexible than offers where every free bet has to go on a four-leg acca.

A few things trip people up. Only your first bet counts, so a £2 bet before your £5 one ruins it. If you bet each-way, only the win part counts towards the £5. You can’t cash out the qualifying bet, and bets on specials, the Tote, pools or price boosts don’t qualify. If you put it in an acca, every selection must be 1/2 or bigger.

The free bets last 7 days and the stake isn’t returned, so a £5 free bet on a 4/1 winner pays £20, not £25.

What’s it really worth?

Put each of your four flexible £5 free bets on a 2/1 shot and if two of them win you take home £20 (2 × £10 profit, stakes not returned). That’s four times your original fiver from just half your free bets. Most of the value is in those four, so don’t waste them on long shots just because they’re free.

About Coral

Who owns Coral?

Coral is owned by Entain plc, the same group that runs Ladbrokes. The two were long-time high-street rivals. Ladbrokes bought Coral’s chain of 891 shops from Bass in 1998 but was ordered to sell most of them, and the two finally merged in November 2016. Online, Coral’s UK betting runs through LC International Limited, based in Gibraltar and licensed by the Gambling Commission under account 54743.

On the record: in August 2022 LC International agreed to pay £14 million as part of a £17 million Entain settlement with the Commission for regulatory failures. LC International runs Ladbrokes as well as Coral, so the same penalty sits on both brands.

Sports and bet types

What can you bet on at Coral?

Coral covers all the main UK sports, and cash out works across most of them: football, tennis, darts, cricket, snooker, boxing, UK racing and the Six Nations. Coral has betting shops all over the country as well as the online betting site.

Horse racing

Best Odds Guaranteed from 8am once you opt in. Every day, Coral pays an extra each-way place above standard terms on UK races with 5 or more runners.

Racing Bet Builder

Combine Winner, Top Finish and Winning Distance markets on one race. Your welcome offer includes a £5 free bet for exactly this.

Football Bet Builder

Build your own bet from one match’s markets, from goals and scorers to cards, and use your football Bet Builder free bet on it.

Cash out

Full and partial cash out (10% to 90% of the bet) across most major sports, capped at £50,000 per bet.

Player feedback

What do punters say about Coral?

Coral scores 1.2 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 3,567 reviews (checked October 2026), and 91% of them are one star. Coral doesn’t reply to negative reviews there, and hasn’t been inviting customers to leave them, so the page is mostly people with a grievance. Still, the themes are worth knowing.

  • Held or refused payouts. Several reviewers say winnings were held or refused. One says a payment arrived only after they complained publicly; another says small withdrawals were quick but bigger ones dragged.
  • Document requests and closures. Some describe accounts locked after repeated ID requests, including a dispute over a virtual card.
  • Settlement disputes. Complaints include a disputed race result and bets that were suspended or disappeared.
  • Slow complaints handling. Live chat is called unhelpful, and one reviewer waited weeks for a case manager to reply. The only recent five-star review praised a member of staff in one of Coral’s shops.
Pros and cons

Coral: the good and the not so good

Pros

  • Just a fiver to qualify £5 at 1/2 unlocks £30. That’s six times your stake, and a lower entry point than most rivals’ £10 bets.
  • Flexible free bets Four of the six can go on any sports market, so you can back a single on a horse or a darts match instead of being forced into accas.
  • Good racing extras BOG from 8am plus an extra each-way place every day on UK races with 5+ runners. On a busy Saturday at Newbury that adds up.

Cons

  • Very poor Trustpilot score 1.2 / 5 with 91% one-star reviews and no replies from Coral to negative ones.
  • BOG needs opting in Forget to opt in and you won’t get the bigger SP on a drifter.
  • Regulatory record LC International, which runs Coral and Ladbrokes, paid £14 million in a 2022 settlement with the Gambling Commission.

Coral vs Ladbrokes, Betfred and Betway

Coral and Ladbrokes have the same owner and the same offer. Here’s how they compare with Betfred and Betway.

BookmakerWelcome offerMin oddsBest Odds GuaranteedTrustpilot
CoralBet £5, Get £301/2 (1.5)Yes, from 8am (opt in)1.2
LadbrokesBet £5, Get £301/2 (1.5)Yes, from 8am1.2
BetfredBet £10 Get £50Evens (2.0)Yes, from 8am3.1
BetwayBet £10 Get £40Evens (2.0)Yes, after 9am1.2

Coral and Ladbrokes are the cheapest ways in, needing only a fiver at 1/2. Betfred gives more in total (£50) but you need to stake £10 at Evens. Betway’s £40 sounds bigger than Coral’s £30, but every Betway free bet has to go on a four-leg acca or Bet Builder, while four of Coral’s six can go on anything.

Conclusion

Is Coral worth joining?

For a low-stakes punter who likes the horses, Coral’s welcome offer is one of the best value deals around: £30 in mostly flexible free bets for a fiver. Daily Extra Places and BOG from 8am make it a decent everyday racing bookie too, as long as you remember to opt in.

The downside is service. Trustpilot reviews are very poor and the group has a heavy regulatory history. Get verified early and keep withdrawals to the method you deposited with. See our best horse racing betting sites for more options.
