Washington’s Best Gambling Sites

Sports betting was legalized in the state of Washington in March of 2020 when Governor Jay Inslee signed House Bill 2638 into law. Under this law, only in-person sports betting is legal at one of the 29 tribal casinos providing land-based sportsbooks. The first sportsbooks were launched in 2021.

Online sports betting remains illegal. However, you may make online or mobile bets at one of Washington’s sportsbooks provided that you are physically present inside the tribal casino that is home to that sportsbook.

Several of the major players in the US sports betting industry have partnered with tribal casinos in the state to offer brick and mortar sportsbooks.

For instance, Caesars Sportsbook is partnered with the Spokane Tribe Casino and the Chewelah Casino. BetMGM is paired with Emerald Queen Casino & Hotel in Tacoma and the Emerald Queen Casino at Fife. The DraftKings Sportsbook is located at the Quil Ceda Creek Casino. FanDuel teams with the Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort. Unibet was the most recent land-based sportsbook to launch in partnership with the Swinomish Casino & Lodge on April 13, 2023. Betfred has paired with the Silver Reef Casino Resort, but their sportsbook has yet to launch.

Washington Online Casinos

All casino action in the state of Washington takes place in person at one of the state’s 29 tribal casinos. They all offer the standard casino fare such as slots, blackjack, roulette and poker.

In January of 2022, there was a lawsuit launched in the state by Maverick Gaming seeking to break up this tribal gaming hold on sports betting. However, the arguments put forth in this suit were remarkably similar to the legal attempt in Florida to break up the Seminole tribe’s monopoly on sports betting in the Sunshine State. The US Supreme Court declined to hear that case, all but rendering the Maverick Gaming lawsuit moot.

There’s been no movement toward adding an online casino option in the state of Washington. In fact, online gambling is still classified as a Class C felony in Washington state.

In order for that to change and for online casino gambling to become legal and regulated, there would have to be a bill put forth that gained approval from both the state house and senate and then was signed into law by the Governor.

There is nothing to indicate when this might happen, or whether the state will ever agree on online gambling laws.

Washington Sweepstakes Casinos

Washington is among the few US states that prohibits social and sweepstakes casinos. Unlike most states which classify this style of casino as a sweepstakes game and thus covered under sweepstakes law, in Washington the state government has classified social casinos as gambling.

The vast majority of social casinos will not accept players from the state of Washington. And in the case of the few that might consider a customer from the Evergreen State, they will only permit them to play in regular mode for fun and enjoyment and not in sweepstakes mode when there is the chance to win prizes, including cash.
