Wisconsin Online Casinos and Legal Gambling Overview

Among midwestern US states, Wisconsin has proven to be slower off the mark when it comes to legal and regulated gambling than neighboring states like Michigan, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana.

Legal and regulated sports betting was finally approved in the Badger State in 2021. But you can only bet in person at brick and mortar sportsbooks. Land-based casino gambling is also available to people in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin State Lottery has been offered since 1989. Though there is no live horse racing in Wisconsin, online wagering on horse racing is legal through any of the major advance deposit wagering sites like AmWager, 1/ST BET, Betptc, TwinSpires, Paribet, and DRF Bets.

Daily fantasy sports can be played by people in Wisconsin. However, it is not regulated by the government. Attempts to pass bills that would regulate DFS play in the state have all failed.

It was July 1, 2021 when sports betting was finally given the stamp of approval by the Wisconsin state government. Amendments to gambling compacts with the state’s tribes that were also approved by the federal Department of the Interior opened the door to the legalization of sports betting.

However, the Wisconsin sports betting blueprint is completely different from the way it works in any of the neighboring states.

None of the popular US sports betting apps such as BetMGM, Bet365, BetRivers, Caesars, DraftKings or FanDuel are offered in Wisconsin. Instead, there are brick and mortar sportsbooks, all of them located inside tribal casinos and operated by the tribes.

The Oneida Tribe was the first to launch a sportsbook in Wisconsin in November of 2021. The St. Croix Chippewa Indians, the Forest County Potawatomi Nation and the Sokaogon Chippewa Community all operate sportsbooks in the state.

The Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians and the state of Wisconsin recently agreed to an amendment to the tribe’s gaming compact which could see the tribe soon also open a land-based sportsbook.

Technically, you can place a sports bet online in Wisconsin, but there’s a catch. The Oneida tribe does offer a downloadable mobile app. However, to use it, you must be physically present on Oneida tribal land, which covers an area of just 102 square miles.

There’s been no movement within the state government to try and add a more widespread mobile and online option for sports betting in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Online Casinos

While casino gambling is legal in Wisconsin, it is also limited to in person play at brick and mortar sites. There are 26 casinos operating within state lines. All of them are tribal casinos operated by 11 different tribes situated in the state.

You can play slots, table games and poker inside these tribal casinos. As for online casino gambling, no effort is being made at the present time to legalize it in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Sweepstakes Casinos

If it’s online casino gambling that you must have and you live in Wisconsin, there is a way to make this happen. Social casinos offer all the same games, bells and whistles as real money casinos. You just can’t win real money.

Playing standard games with gold coins, you’re only in it for the fun of it all. You do have the option to move up to premium game level and play with sweepstakes coins. Winnings here can be exchanged for prizes such as merchandise, gift cards and in some cases, even actual cash. In either instance, you never have to pay to play. Since these social casinos are governed by sweepstakes laws, it’s not classified as gambling.
