4. New Hampshire

With the 2nd most lottery winners per 100,000 residents as well as one of the longest life expectancies in the nation (79), New Hampshire is one of the luckiest states in the country, according to our analysis. The state also ranks high when it comes to low accident risks.

5. Massachusetts

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 20% of the population in Massachusetts claim Irish ancestry, so it’s safe to say that the state has the luck of the Irish on their side. In fact, 7 out of 10 states are all located in the South, including Alabama (No. 1); Mississippi (No. 2); Louisiana (No. 3); Tennessee (No. 4); Kentucky (No. 8); Arkansas (No. 9) and Texas (No. 10).

One of the most common “unlucky” factors within all these states is the short life expectancy. Mississippi has the shortest in the nation (71.9), while Louisiana, Alabama, Kentucky, Arkansas and Tennessee are all below 74.

We then determined each state’s weighted average across all metrics in order to calculate its overall score. Note: Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah do not sell lottery tickets.
