Luckiest and Least Lucky States in America

Lucky Gambling States USA

Whether it’s a four-leaf clover, a daily ritual or a special number, most of us like to keep a little bit of luck on our side.

But does where you live play a factor when it comes to luck?

As an online casino offers site, we at aGamble.com know a thing or two about luck. So, we decided to take a closer look at the concept of luck and geography. Our analysis evaluated key factors within all 50 states across the country, including the number of lottery winners, life expectancy, weather-related accidents, work-related accidents, traffic-related accidents and identity theft reports.

Luckiest States in USA

Which States are the Luckiest?

1. Minnesota

When it comes to living in a lucky state, look no further than Minnesota. The “Land of 10,000 Lakes” is among one of the top states for lottery winners (23 overall), ranks 3rd in the nation for longest life expectancy (79.1) and ranks 5th for least vehicle and pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 residents (33.1).

2. California

Our second state on the list is a place where people have struck gold - literally. Home to the famous gold rush in the mid-1800s, the concept of luck appears to run deep in “The Golden State.” Overall, California boasts 45 lottery winners and the state is tied with Massachusetts and New Hampshire for the 4th longest life expectancy in the nation (79).

3. New York

If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. The Empire State ranks 3rd on our list of luckiest states due to its high number of lottery winners (53) and low vehicle and pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 residents (25.2).

4. New Hampshire

With the 2nd most lottery winners per 100,000 residents as well as one of the longest life expectancies in the nation (79), New Hampshire is one of the luckiest states in the country, according to our analysis. The state also ranks high when it comes to low accident risks.

5. Massachusetts

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 20% of the population in Massachusetts claim Irish ancestry, so it’s safe to say that the state has the luck of the Irish on their side. Along with 11 lottery winners, Massachusetts is also home to one of the longest life expectancies (79) as well as a low number of work, weather and traffic-related fatalities.

Least Lucky States in America

There are lucky states and then there are states that are not so lucky.

Our analysis also looked at the least lucky states in America and states in the South dominate the top 10. In fact, 7 out of 10 states are all located in the South, including Alabama (No. 1); Mississippi (No. 2); Louisiana (No. 3); Tennessee (No. 4); Kentucky (No. 8); Arkansas (No. 9) and Texas (No. 10).

One of the most common “unlucky” factors within all these states is the short life expectancy. Mississippi has the shortest in the nation (71.9), while Louisiana, Alabama, Kentucky, Arkansas and Tennessee are all below 74.

States With the Most Lottery Winners

US States With the Most Lottery Winners

Living in a state that has produced multiple lottery winners is definitely a lucky place to live, especially when considering the odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are roughly 1 in 292.2 million. No other state in the nation has produced more lottery winners per 100,000 residents than Delaware. Overall, Delaware is home to one lottery winner per 100,000. Not too shabby.

Whether it’s living a longer life or having a better chance at winning the lottery, luck is subjective and comes in many different forms. But the odds just might be in your favor if you happen to live in one of the luckiest states in America.

Research Methodology

In order to identify the luckiest states in America, we analyzed key categories, including finances, life expectancy, environment as well as accident risk. We evaluated these categories using 7 metrics. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale. We then determined each state’s weighted average across all metrics in order to calculate its overall score. Note: Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah do not sell lottery tickets.
