UK Horse Racing Betting Sites

Here’s what we think are the best UK horse racing betting sites you can join right now.

Betfred, Ladbrokes and Coral come out on top because all three pay Best Odds Guaranteed on UK and Irish racing from 8am, all three run extra places (Ladbrokes and Coral every day, Betfred on selected races), and all three were built in the betting shop long before they went online.

Betfred gets the nod overall: free UK racing streams with any balance in your account, Extra Places and Super Extra Places at 1/5 odds, and the best Trustpilot score of the big high-street names.

Enjoy!

Below you’ll find our ranked list, a side-by-side table of the racing extras that actually change your returns, and plain-English guides to each-way betting, Best Odds Guaranteed, Rule 4 and non-runner no bet, all with worked £ examples.

We’ve also put the big races of the 2026–27 season in one calendar, from Cheltenham in March to the Grand National in April, the Guineas and the Derby, and Royal Ascot in June, and explained why racing bets get different tax treatment from April 2027.

If you bet on more than racing, our best UK betting sites guide covers football, tennis, darts and the rest.

Rankings are agamble.com editorial, updated October 2026. Every site listed holds a UK Gambling Commission licence.

Best UK horse racing betting sites for October 2026

Ranked on racing alone: price concessions, place terms, streaming and how useful the welcome offer is if horses are all you bet on. Trustpilot scores were checked in October 2026.

  1. Betfred

    agamble.com’s Pick
    Best overall for racing
    4.6
    / 5 racing

Betfred started as one betting shop in Salford in 1967 and still feels like a racing firm first. You get Best Odds Guaranteed on any UK or Irish race from 8am, Extra Places and Super Extra Places at 1/5 odds on selected races, and free UK and US racing streams as long as you have any balance in your account. The streams can lag up to around 30 seconds behind the live pictures, so don’t try to bet in-running off them.

  2. Ladbrokes

Best for free UK racing streams
    4.5
    / 5 racing

Ladbrokes traces its roots to 1886, when it started as commission agents for horses trained at Ladbroke Hall in Warwickshire. It pays BOG on UK and Irish racing from 8am, adds extra each-way places on selected races every day, and streams UK horse and greyhound racing free to any active account. Irish and international races need a £1 bet to watch. The downside is service: it scores 1.2 from 4,283 Trustpilot reviews (checked October 2026).

  3. Coral

    4.4
    / 5 racing

Coral adds an extra each-way place above the standard terms on UK races with five or more runners, every day, which is about as generous as standing offers get. BOG runs from 8am, but you have to opt in. Its racing bet builder lets you combine Winner, Top Finish and Winning Distance in one bet, and the welcome offer includes a £5 free bet for a horse racing bet builder.

  4. bet365

    Best for big-race depth
    4.3
    / 5 racing

bet365 pays Best Odds Guaranteed on UK and Irish racing from 8am on race day, settling at the bigger of your price or the SP. Its Position Payout markets on selected races pay out on a sliding scale by finishing position, which suits you if you like a horse to run well but doubt it can win. Users rate the racing streams. The Promo Code 365GMBLR can be entered at sign-up but doesn’t change the offer amount.

  5. Unibet

Best BOG limits for bigger stakes
    4.2
    / 5 racing

Unibet pays BOG on UK and Irish racing from 8am, on singles and multiples, up to £25,000 per customer per day. That cap matters more than most punters think if you bet in bigger amounts. Two honest catches: you need a £1 bet on a race to stream it, and the welcome offer is no use for racing, as the qualifying bet excludes racing and the free bets can’t be used on it.

  6. Betway

    Best for streaming across sports
    4.1
    / 5 racing

Betway pays BOG on all UK and Irish horse racing bets placed after 9am. Betway TV streams horse racing alongside football and tennis, as long as your account has at least £2 in it. The welcome free bet tokens go on bet builders and accas of four legs or more at odds of 4.0+, so they’re not much use for a straight racing single.

  7. QuinnBet

    Best smaller racing bookie
    4.0
    / 5 racing

QuinnBet is the best-reviewed bookmaker on our list after Spreadex, at 3.8 from 4,292 Trustpilot reviews (checked October 2026). It pays BOG on all UK racing, multiples included, runs extra places among its racing promotions and streams UK and Irish racing. Its welcome offer works on racing: bet £10+ at evens or bigger and get 50% of your first day’s losses back as a free bet, up to £25.

  8. Virgin Bet

    Best for high BOG ceiling
    3.9
    / 5 racing

Virgin Bet pays BOG on UK and Irish racing from 10am, with a maximum benefit of £50,000, which is a high ceiling. It runs extra places on selected races and streams horse racing, though not greyhounds. Note that the welcome free bets can’t be used each-way, so use them on win singles.

  9. LiveScore Bet

Best for extra places on busy fields
    3.8
    / 5 racing

LiveScore Bet runs extra places on selected races every day, scaled to the size of the field, which is where each-way punters find value. Its version of Best Odds Guaranteed is conditional: you get better-price payouts on UK and Irish racing from 10am only if you stake £25 or more a week. Like Virgin Bet, the welcome free bets can’t go on each-way bets.

  10. Spreadex

    Best for racing spread betting
    3.7
    / 5 racing

Spreadex is different: fixed-odds racing and racing spread bets in one account, plus specials like First Past The Post and 2nd To A Rag. It has the best Trustpilot score on our list. The welcome offer includes racing spread bets (Winning Favourites and a £1 Race Index bet), but remember spread betting losses can exceed your deposit. That risk is why it sits last here, not because of the service.

18+. SpreadEx £60 free bets bonus offer terms: Spread betting losses can exceed deposit. Place a £10 fixed odds single or £10 each-way bet at minimum odds of 1/2 and get 3 x £10 free fixed odds bets, 3 x £5 Total Goals football spread bets and 3 x £5 Winning Favourites spread bets and a £1 racing Race Index spread bet. Not every welcome offer helps a racing punter. Unibet’s excludes racing completely, Betway’s tokens go on accas and bet builders, and the Virgin Bet and LiveScore Bet free bets can’t be used each-way. Ladbrokes, Coral and QuinnBet clearly let you put free bets on a horse, and Spreadex includes racing spread bets.

Best overall

Best horse racing betting site overall: Betfred

Betfred is the one we’d open first if you only had room for one racing account. It’s the only bookie on our list that ticks every box in the comparison table with no strings: BOG on any UK or Irish race from 8am, Extra Places and Super Extra Places at 1/5, and free racing streams with any balance at all, no qualifying bet needed. That last point is easy to overlook. Watching the 3.35 at Haydock without having to stick a quid on it first is worth something.

There’s real racing history here too. Betfred owned the Tote from 2011 to 2019, with exclusive pool betting rights until 2018, and in 2027 it sponsors the Betfred Guineas Festival at Newmarket (30 April to 2 May) and the Betfred Derby Festival at Epsom (4 to 5 June). The welcome offer is Bet £10 Get £50: £30 in sports free bets plus £20 in acca free bets, though the acca free bets can’t be used on each-way accas.

The downsides are worth knowing. Betfred agreed a £900,000 settlement with the Gambling Commission in June 2026 over customer interaction failings, after a £240,000 penalty in May 2025. Its 3.1 on Trustpilot (checked October 2026) is middling, if well ahead of Ladbrokes and Coral at 1.2. And the streams can run up to around 30 seconds behind, so they’re for watching, not for trading in-running.

Methodology

How we chose the best horse racing bookmakers

A good football bookie isn’t automatically a good racing bookie. We ranked these ten on what matters when you’re backing horses.

Best Odds Guaranteed, and from what time BOG adds money to your winning bets for nothing. We checked whether each bookie offers it, whether it starts at 8am, 9am or 10am, and whether there’s a cap or a condition, like LiveScore Bet’s £25-a-week staking rule.
Place terms and extra places Each-way punters live and die by place terms. Bookies that pay an extra place every day, like Coral on UK races of five or more runners, scored higher than those that only do it on Saturdays or festivals.
Streaming and what it costs you Free with any balance (Betfred), free with any active account (Ladbrokes for UK racing), a £2 balance (Betway) or a £1 bet per race (Unibet). We ranked the no-strings options higher.
Can you use the welcome offer on racing? We read the full terms, not just the headline. An offer you can’t use on a horse is worth nothing to a racing punter, however big the number.
Racing extras Racing bet builders, Position Payout markets, racing spread bets and specials. These are bonuses, not deal-breakers, but they separate firms that care about racing from those that just list it.
Trust and track record Every bookie here holds a Gambling Commission licence. We also looked at fines and settlements on the public register, and at Trustpilot scores checked in October 2026, and we say so in the picks when a record is poor.
Best Odds Guaranteed

Best Odds Guaranteed explained: which bookmakers pay it

Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG) means that if you take a fixed price on a horse and the Starting Price (SP) ends up bigger, you’re paid at the SP. If the price shortens, you keep the price you took. You can’t lose from it.

Worked example. At 10am you put £10 on a horse at 6/1. By the off it has drifted to 9/1. Without BOG your return is £70 (£60 winnings plus your £10 stake). With BOG you’re paid at 9/1, so you get £100 back. That’s an extra £30 for doing nothing. If the horse shortens to 4/1 instead, you still get your 6/1.

The catch is in the detail. BOG usually covers UK and Irish racing only, it starts at a set time on race day, and some bookies cap it. Here’s what we found for the bookies on our list:

Best odds guaranteed bookmakers: start times and limits

From 8am: Betfred (any UK or Irish race), Ladbrokes, Coral (you need to opt in), bet365 (bigger of your price or SP) and Unibet (singles and multiples, up to £25,000 per customer per day).

From 9am: Betway, on all UK and Irish horse racing bets.

From 10am: Virgin Bet (maximum benefit £50,000, not greyhounds) and LiveScore Bet, where it only applies if you stake £25 or more a week.

No set time we could confirm: QuinnBet pays BOG on all UK racing, including multiples. Not every bookie offers it: 10bet, for example, doesn’t offer BOG on horse racing.

When BOG matters most

BOG is worth most on horses that drift in the betting, so it pays to have it on every racing bet rather than just the ones you think might lengthen. If you bet the night before, BOG won’t cover you until the bookie’s start time on race day, so a 7pm bet at 8/1 is paid at 8/1 even if the horse goes off 12/1. Wait until the morning if the price looks steady.

Each-way betting

Each-way betting and extra places explained

An each-way bet is two bets of the same stake: one on the horse to win, and one on it to place. So a £10 each-way bet costs £20. The place part pays a fraction of the win odds, usually 1/4 or 1/5, if your horse finishes within the places the bookie pays.

Worked example at 1/5 odds. You put £10 each-way (£20 total) on a 10/1 shot in a 10-runner non-handicap. Standard terms are three places at 1/5 of the odds, so the place part is settled at 2/1.

If it wins, the win part returns £110 and the place part £30. That’s £140 back, £120 profit. If it finishes second or third, the win part loses but the place part returns £30, so you’re £10 up on your £20 outlay. If it finishes fourth or worse, you lose £20.

Each-way is best on bigger prices. On a 2/1 favourite, the place part at 1/5 pays just 2/5, and you’d lose money overall if it only places.

How extra places work

Extra places mean the bookie pays one or more places beyond the standard terms. Say you have £10 each-way at 16/1 in a 16-runner handicap. Standard terms are four places at 1/4. Your bookie pays five. Your horse finishes fifth. Normally you’d lose £20. With the extra place, the place part pays at 4/1, so you get £50 back and finish £30 up.

Coral adds an extra place on UK races of five or more runners every day. Betfred runs Extra Places and Super Extra Places, Ladbrokes adds them on selected races daily, and LiveScore Bet scales them to the size of the field. For the Grand National, place terms are usually confirmed in the days before the race, so compare them on the morning.

Place terms

Standard each-way place terms

These are the standard UK terms. Extra places go on top.

Race and runnersPlaces paidFraction of the odds
2 to 4 runnersWin onlyNo each-way
5 to 7 runners21/4
8 or more runners (non-handicap)31/5
Handicap, 12 to 15 runners31/4
Handicap, 16 or more runners41/4

The big-field handicaps are where each-way bets make most sense: four places at 1/4 in a 20-runner race is generous terms before any extra places.

Rule 4 and NRNB

Rule 4 deductions and non-runner no bet

When a horse is withdrawn after the betting has started, everything else in the race has a better chance of winning, so the prices you took were too big. Rule 4 is how bookies fix that. They take a deduction from your winnings, in pence in the pound, based on the price of the horse that came out. The shorter its price, the bigger the deduction.

Worked example. You have £10 on a horse at 5/1. A 2/1 shot is withdrawn after you placed your bet, which means a deduction of 30p in the pound. Your £50 winnings drop to £35, so you get £45 back instead of £60. Your stake is never touched, only your winnings. If you took the SP rather than a fixed price, there’s usually no deduction, as the SP is formed on the smaller field.

What is non-runner no bet?

Non-runner no bet (NRNB) is about ante-post bets, the ones you place days, weeks or months ahead. Normally, if your horse doesn’t run, you lose your stake. With NRNB, you get it back.

Worked example. In January you put £10 on a horse at 12/1 for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. In February it picks up an injury and misses the race. On standard ante-post terms, your £10 is gone. On NRNB terms, it’s refunded. The trade-off is that NRNB prices tend to be a bit shorter, and bookies tend to switch it on closer to the big festivals rather than months out, so look for the NRNB tag on the race before you bet.

Festivals

Cheltenham betting sites and Grand National betting sites

There’s no special list of Cheltenham betting sites or Grand National betting sites. The same bookies just go bigger on concessions. That makes the standing offers in our comparison table the best guide, because a firm that already pays BOG from 8am and extra places every day will usually push harder at the festivals.

Cheltenham Festival, 16–19 March 2027

Cheltenham is four days of championship racing, and most of the money is placed ante-post. That makes NRNB the concession to look for in the weeks before. On the day, BOG from 8am is a real edge, since the bigger-field handicaps often see horses drift. If you’re backing each-way in the handicaps, compare extra places between Coral, Betfred and Ladbrokes before you commit.

Grand National, Saturday 10 April 2027

The Grand National is the race for each-way betting. Standard handicap terms pay four places at 1/4, but many bookies offer extra places on the day. A £5 each-way bet (£10 total) on a 33/1 shot that finishes sixth with a six-place bookie returns £46.25 at 1/4 odds, rather than nothing. Shop around on the morning of the race, as the place terms often change in the last day or two.

Tax

Tax on horse racing bets: what changes from April 2027

First, the bit that matters most: you don’t pay tax on your betting winnings in the UK, however much you win. Gambling duties are paid by the bookies on their profits, not by you.

What changes is how bookies are taxed. From 1 April 2027, a new 25% rate of General Betting Duty applies to remote (online and phone) betting. Online bets on UK horse racing are the exception and stay at 15%. The government’s reasoning is that bookies already pay the Horserace Betting Levy on top: 10% of their annual gross profits on British racing, for operators above a £500,000 threshold. In March 2026 the government confirmed the levy would stay at its current level. So racing ends up taxed at roughly the same combined rate as other sports, with the levy money going back into racing.

For you, the likely effect is on the margins of what bookies offer. A firm paying 25% on football profits and 15% on UK racing profits has more room on racing, which could mean racing concessions like BOG and extra places hold up better than football offers. That’s a reasonable expectation, not a promise. Bets placed on self-service terminals in betting shops, pool bets and spread bets are not covered by the new 25% rate.

Trust

How to find a reputable horse racing bookie

Every bookie on this page holds a Gambling Commission licence. If you’re checking one we haven’t covered, these five steps take ten minutes.

1
Check the licence on the public register
Find the licence number in the site footer and look it up on the Gambling Commission public register. Betfred’s licensee is Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited, account 39544; Ladbrokes and Coral share LC International Limited, account 54743. If the name or domain doesn’t match, walk away.
2
Look at the regulatory actions
The register lists fines and settlements. Recent ones on our list include a £609,104 settlement for QuinnBet in August 2026, £900,000 for Betfred in June 2026 and £10m for Unibet’s licensee in September 2025. A fine doesn’t mean a site is unsafe, but repeated failings tell you how seriously it takes customer protection.
3
Read the BOG and place terms
Check what time BOG starts, whether it’s capped, and whether you need to opt in. A bookie that hides these terms is one to treat with caution.
4
Read recent reviews
Trustpilot scores vary hugely, from 1.2 for Ladbrokes, Coral and Betway to 4.4 for Spreadex. Read the most recent complaints for patterns, such as delayed withdrawals or accounts being restricted after a few winning bets.
5
Set your limits before your first bet
Set a deposit limit when you sign up. If betting stops being fun, GAMSTOP blocks you from every UK-licensed site for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years, and the National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133) is free and open 24 hours a day.

FAQ

UK horse racing betting FAQs

What is the best horse racing betting site in the UK?
We rate Betfred the best overall for racing. It pays Best Odds Guaranteed on any UK or Irish race from 8am, runs Extra Places and Super Extra Places at 1/5, and streams UK racing free with any balance in your account. Ladbrokes and Coral are close behind.
Which bookmakers offer Best Odds Guaranteed?
Of the bookies on our list, Betfred, Ladbrokes, Coral (opt in), bet365 and Unibet pay BOG from 8am on UK and Irish racing. Betway starts at 9am, Virgin Bet at 10am and QuinnBet covers all UK racing including multiples. LiveScore Bet only offers it if you stake £25 or more a week.
How does an each-way bet work?
It’s two equal bets: one to win and one to place. £5 each-way costs £10. If your horse places but doesn’t win, the place half pays a fraction of the odds, usually 1/4 or 1/5. A £5 each-way bet at 10/1 that finishes second in an eight-runner race returns £15 at 1/5 odds, a £5 profit on your £10.
Which bookies pay extra places on the Grand National?
It changes every year and is usually confirmed in the days before the race. Standard terms are four places, so check on the morning of the race and compare who’s paying more.
What does Rule 4 mean for my bet?
If a horse is withdrawn after you’ve taken a price, the bookie takes a deduction from your winnings, based on the withdrawn horse’s price. A 2/1 shot coming out means 30p in the pound, so £50 of winnings becomes £35. Your stake is never reduced.
What is non-runner no bet?
NRNB means you get your stake back on an ante-post bet if your horse doesn’t run. Without it, a horse missing the race means a lost bet. Bookies tend to offer it on the big festival races in the run-up to them.
Can I watch horse racing for free on betting sites?
Yes, at some. Betfred streams UK and US racing to anyone with a balance, and Ladbrokes streams UK racing free to any active account. Betway needs a £2 balance, Unibet needs a £1 bet on the race, and the exchange Matchbook streams racing with no bet needed.
Do I pay tax on horse racing winnings in the UK?
No. Betting winnings are tax-free for UK punters, whatever the amount. Bookies pay duty on their profits instead.
Did the UK raise the tax on horse racing betting?
No. From 1 April 2027 online betting duty rises to 25%, but online bets on UK horse racing stay at 15%, because bookies also pay a 10% levy on their British racing profits. Punters still pay nothing.
Can I use a welcome free bet on horse racing?
At several, yes, but check the terms. Unibet’s free bets can’t be used on racing at all, Betway’s go on accas and bet builders, and Virgin Bet’s and LiveScore Bet’s can’t be used each-way. Coral even includes a £5 free bet for a horse racing bet builder.
