Betfred is our top-rated UK betting site right now, and it gets there on two things: one of the biggest simple sign-up offers of the big bookies (£50 in free bets for a £10 bet) and some of the best everyday perks for racing fans. It started as one betting shop in Salford in 1967 and it still feels like a bookie built around horse racing.

Below we explain exactly how the free bets work, the small print that trips people up, who owns Betfred, what you can bet on and what real punters say about it. We also compare it with bet365, Ladbrokes and Betway, so you can see if it’s the right home for your tenner. Enjoy!

Welcome offer

How the Betfred free bet offer works

Place a £10 bet at Evens or bigger and, win or lose, Betfred gives you £50 in free bets once it settles. Say you back England to beat Wales at 11/10 on a Saturday afternoon. Whatever the result, you get five £10 free bets by the evening (Betfred says within 10 hours of settlement).

Three of those can go on any sports bet: a horse at Cheltenham, a Premier League scorer, darts at Ally Pally. The other two are for win-only accumulators with at least four selections, and they can’t go on each-way accas. Free bet stakes aren’t returned, so a £10 free bet on a 4/1 winner pays £40, not £50.

Only your very first bet counts, and it must be a single stake of £10 or more. Two £5 bets won’t do it, and nor will a £10 bet you cash out early. Bets on Totepool and virtual sports don’t count either. If Betfred voids your first bet, the next valid one takes its place.

Deposit with a debit card in your own name. PayPal, Skrill or a prepaid Visa or Mastercard means no free bets. Betfred may also send an automated text asking you to confirm you want the offer: reply within 7 days of your first bet settling, or the free bets won’t land.

What’s it really worth?

Put each of the three £10 sports free bets on an Evens shot and you’d expect roughly one or two to win. Each winner pays £10 profit, because the stake isn’t returned. The two acca free bets are long shots: a four-fold of Evens picks is 15/1, so £10 would pay £150, but it only lands if all four win. In plain terms, the £50 is worth less than £50 in cash, but it’s still more than you get from bet365 (£30) or Betway (£40) for the same £10.

Promo Code

No. There’s no Betfred promo code for the welcome offer. Sign up, deposit £10 with a debit card and place your first £10 bet at Evens or bigger, and the £50 in free bets is added automatically once it settles.

About Betfred

Who owns Betfred?

Fred Done opened his first shop in Ordsall, Salford, in 1967, and Betfred is still privately owned by him and his brother Peter through Betfred Group Holdings. It bought the Tote from the government in 2011 and owned it until 2019, with an exclusive pool betting licence that ran until 2018. That’s a big part of why the name is so familiar to racing fans. Betfred also sponsors the Betfred Guineas Festival at Newmarket and the Betfred Derby Festival at Epsom in 2027.

Online betting runs through Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited, licensed by the Gambling Commission under account 39544. The same licence covers betfred.com and oddsking.com.

On the record: the Commission fined Betfred £240,000 in May 2025 for a technical standards breach the company reported itself, and Betfred agreed a £900,000 settlement in June 2026 over failings in how it checked in with customers who might be at risk. Neither is unusual for a bookie this size, but they’re worth knowing about.

Sports and bet types

What can you bet on at Betfred?

Betfred covers all the big UK sports and the usual bet types, but it’s at its best on the horses. Here’s what stands out.

Horse racing

Best Odds Guaranteed on any UK or Irish race from 8am on race day. If you take 5/1 and the horse wins at an SP of 8/1, you’re paid at 8/1. Extra Places and Super Extra Places on selected races, so an each-way bet on the Grand National can pay out on more places than the standard terms.

Free racing streams

UK and US horse racing streams are free as long as you have any balance in your account. They can lag up to around 30 seconds behind the live pictures, so don’t count on them for in-running betting.

Football

Bet Builder on goals, scorers, corners and cards, plus in-play betting and price boosts on the Saturday 3pm kick-offs and the bigger televised games.

Cash out

Available on many pre-match and in-play bets. Some reviewers say the in-play cash out limits can be strict.

Racing bet types

Win, each-way, forecasts, tricasts and accumulators, as well as standard singles. Note that the free bets can’t be used on combination forecasts or tricasts.

App

The Betfred Sports, Casino & Games app is rated 4.6 out of 5 from 69,158 ratings on the UK App Store, and there’s an Android version too.

Payments

Betfred withdrawal time and ID checks

Betfred doesn’t publish a fixed payout time on the pages we checked, so we won’t guess one. Trustpilot reviewers report anything from a few hours to several days. The delays nearly always come from extra checks.

Betfred’s offer terms say it may ask for photo ID (passport or full driving licence), proof of address dated within the last three months, and a selfie holding your ID. Get that done early, before you have a win waiting, and withdraw to the debit card you deposited with. Remember that credit cards have been banned for gambling in the UK since April 2020.

Player feedback

What do punters say about Betfred?

Betfred does better than most big bookies on Trustpilot, with 3.1 out of 5 from 14,826 reviews (checked October 2026). The split is stark though: 38% give five stars and 38% give one. Betfred replies to almost all negative reviews, which most of its big rivals don’t.

  • Fast payouts, for some. One reviewer in autumn 2026 said a win of over £5,000 landed within hours.
  • Slow or held withdrawals, for others. Several recent complaints describe winnings held while extra ID or address checks were done, and one account suspended after a win of around £1,250.
  • Few ongoing free bets. Some long-standing customers say promotions dry up after the welcome offer.
  • The app is solid but not flashy. One reviewer said the bet builder has fewer options than rivals’ and the in-play cash out limits are harsh.
  • Customer service is hit and miss. Complaints mention live chats ending abruptly and emails going unanswered.
Pros and cons

Betfred: the good and the not so good

Pros

  • £50 back for £10 That’s more than bet365’s £30 and Betway’s £40 for the same stake.
  • Built for racing fans BOG from 8am, Extra Places and free racing streams make a real difference on a big Saturday at Aintree or Ascot.
  • A better Trustpilot score than most 3.1 / 5, against 1.2 to 1.3 for bet365, Ladbrokes and Betway.

Cons

  • Debit card only for the offer PayPal and e-wallet users miss out on the free bets.
  • Two of the free bets are acca-only £20 of the £50 must go on win-only accas of four or more selections, which rarely land.
  • Recent regulatory fines £1.14m in penalties and settlements across 2025 and 2026.

Betfred vs bet365, Ladbrokes and Betway

Here’s how Betfred’s welcome offer and racing perks stack up against three of the biggest names in UK betting.

BookmakerWelcome offerMin oddsBest Odds GuaranteedTrustpilot
BetfredBet £10 Get £50Evens (2.0)Yes, from 8am3.1
bet365Bet £10 Get £30 (Promo Code 365GMBLR)1/5 (1.20)Yes, from 8am1.3
LadbrokesBet £5, Get £301/2 (1.5)Yes, from 8am1.2
BetwayBet £10 Get £40Evens (2.0)Yes, from 9am1.2

If you only want to risk a fiver, Ladbrokes is the cheapest way in. For the most free bet value from a tenner, Betfred wins. bet365 has the lowest qualifying odds and a huge range of in-play markets, but the smallest welcome offer of the four. See all our picks on the best UK betting sites and the best horse racing betting sites.

Conclusion

Is Betfred worth joining?

If you like the horses, Betfred is one of the best homes for your bets in the UK. Best Odds Guaranteed, Extra Places and free streams all add up over a season, from Cheltenham in March to the Derby in June. The £50 welcome offer is generous, as long as you use a debit card and make your first bet the qualifying one.

Just don’t expect a steady stream of free bets afterwards, and get your ID sorted before you need to withdraw. Do that and Betfred is an easy recommendation.
